UNC 84, Georgetown 96
We scored 3 points in overtime and that came with only 7 seconds to go. This is a bad way to lose. We couldn't hit the side of a barn over the last 11 minutes of the game. We had a 10 point lead with 6 minutes to go in the game and ended up losing by 12.

First and foremost, we lost because of our shooting (35% on the game) and Georgetown's ability to hit pretty much everything they put up, but I'd be remiss without highlighting the role the refs had in the game. Personally, I'm fine with refs calling touch fouls or fouls for certain situations as long as they are CONSISTENT. The way the refs called the game fell exactly into Georgetown's hands. They called so many in the first half that it gave their key players time to rest in the first half. If they played the whole half like normal, it is likely they would be much more tired at the end of the game. The problem is they didn't call the same fouls in the second half. Maybe they ran out of their allotment? Again, I don't mind fouls not being called as long as they are consistent. I'd love to see a chart of the fouls called throughout the game. I guarantee the teams would show the opposite trends. The result? Georgetown's players were rested by the end of the game and even though they had 3 or 4 fouls, the refs weren't calling anymore against them.

What happened to Ty Lawson's aggressiveness? He got blocked once or twice in the first half and in the second he seemed scared to take the ball to the hoop. Roy said in the post game that he was looking tired toward the end of the game. Maybe that was it. We needed a little leadership down the stretch and a key basket or two. I would have much preferred our chances as time ran out in the second half with Ty driving to the basket than Wayne Ellington shooting a 3 pointer. If we are going to set up a 3 pointer, I would have much preferred for Terry to shoot it. Oh well. It is easy to second guess now. The key was Georgetown picked up the momentum and a Mack truck couldn't have stopped them.

The season is over now. It always comes so suddenly even when you know it is right around the corner. We couldn't possibly live up to the hype behind this team unless we made it to the final four. We got close. This was a painful way to go out and I hope it will serve as incentive for the younger guys to stay around another year.

Overtime notes:
1:17. 81-89. This game is over.
1:38. 81-87. I just don't know what to say. The refs are only allowed to call fouls against UNC. Hansbrough picks up his 4th on a BS call.
3:14. 81-81. HOLY SHIT! What are refs not allowed to call fouls against Georgetown anymore??? Hansbrough got mugged and no call.
4:25. 81-83. Georgetown's first lead since early in the first half.

Second half notes:
0.00. 81-81. They didn't get a shot off. We are going to overtime.
0.01. 81-81. Ellington got a good look at the basket for a 3 pointer, but missed. Georgetown has 1.4 secs for one last shot before we go to overtime.
0.24. 81-81. Oh shit. Georgetown comes down and nails a 3 to tie it. Roy calls another timeout. We can hold for the last shot.
1:04. 81-78. We get a stop! Roy calls a timeout so we can set a play.
1:40. 81-78. We end a 8:12 drought without a field goal after Hansbrough makes one down low. There should have been a foul called, but maybe they are tired of calling so many against Georgetown (even though they are valid).
2:21. 79-76. Georgetown calls a timeout after Hansbrough makes 2 free throws.
2:35. 77-76. Georgetown brings it down to 1. Ugh. Too close for comfort.
3:48. 75-72. Foul on Hibbert to prevent a Wright dunk after a nice pass by Lawson. That's his 4th.
4:12. 75-72. There goes the lead again. We are cold now. Georgetown has scored 7 unanswered. Not looking good right now. You know things are bad because Roy called a timeout.
6:02. 75-65. Wright picks up his 4th foul.
6:51. 75-65. Georgetown has finally went cold missing their last 8 shots.
7:51. 73-65. Lawson is not being as aggressive this game. He's not looking to take a shot. He just caused a turnover by stepping out of bounds after rethinking a drive to the hoop.
9:09. 73-65. Georgetown calls another timeout. You'd think Georgetown might try to conserve timeouts.
9:47. 73-65. Thompson having a monster game. He got another tip in.
11:23. 69-63. A little flurry by Georgetown brings the lead back down to 6.
12:15. 69-58. Largest lead of the game for UNC after a Lawson drive.
13:22. 65-56. We get the lead back to 9 after 4 straight points by Deon. Georgetown has to call a timeout so they can get Hibbert back in the game.
15:37. 59-53. Georgetown is making about everything they put up.
16:09. 59-51. Ellington with a 3.
19:01. 52-46. Hansbrough draws a foul on Hibbert! That's 3 for the Georgetown big man. Hansbrough makes both shots.
Comments:
A game UNC should have won. Sad they did not. UNC got away from what was working in the first half – pounding the ball inside. This lead to points but also got GT’s front line in foul trouble. In the second half, UNC seem to go away from that. Lawson did not do a good job with this. Hopefully he will learn from this.

The other two things which seemed odd were UNC did not push the ball or try to control tempo. The last was no one was in position to get an offensive rebound in the second half. It was as if the shot selection or the timing of the shot took everyone off guard and put them out of position.

True the way the game was called, it was like two games in one. Where there should have been more fouls called that favored UNC, they were not. Any time you get in a close game and have to depend upon a ref making the right call you are in trouble.

It will be interesting to see what the players took away from this and the effect it will have on them next year.

I would hope everyone will return. One thing for sure everyone who does will be older, stronger, and surely wiser. Being so close and then failing one will only hope this will become a huge motivation factor. I don’t think anyone doubts UNC does not have the players to win in 08.

why do you think that roy just abandoned the post in spite of the fantastic play of all involved, including thompson and stepheson? i cannot for the life of me imagine what was going through his mind when we had the ball with 21 sec to go, an obvious advantage on the inside with the foul situation (which we failed to exploit for over 10 min. of the 2nd half), and an opportunity to just put the game on the line with tyler. since when did wayne ellington, mr. 35% shooter for the whole entire season, become our saving grace.........especially when we didnt need a bomber anyway???????????? we just needed to run a good set play inside to islote tyler on the neanderthal protected colored hope, and have him pick up his 5th foul (in spite of the refs favoritism). then we could have sat pretty and let tyler ice it from the line, and then danced all the way back to gods country knowing that we were going to play for a national title.

instead, now we get to go back home and stare at that stat sheet that says all important shit-town players were in serious foul trouble with time left in the 1st half. we failed to exploit their weakness, and we failed to exploit their lack of depth. i knew, you knew, everyone knew that we needed to bring it inside with this team. why we did for one half only and then thought it would be kind of neat and fun to play "lets see if anyone can hit a half-court three point shot" is way beyond me....and i dont even coach mens NCAA Division I Basketball.

We should have driven to the hole for the duration of the half, especially with the extraordinary contributions from thompson and stepheson supposedly helping brandan and tyler get rested for what was expected to be our run-out at the end of the game. instead, we just sat there and looked like we were just waiting for them to come back all along. then with a chance to win the game outright, our little firecracker, the one who scores by pushing and dishing all year, just sits there and dances and prances around midcourt, like he is about to ice the game with the most incredible play you never saw....guess what? you never did.

wayne ellington has been a sub-par perimeter threat all year, and has yet to win a game for us. if that play had to be perimeter shot, why didnt it go to reyshawn, the most consistent threat we have from 3-point land? or more to the point, since all we needed was one single point in the first place, why in the world didnt we run a play inside to draw the contact and then hit our foul shots (had we not done so for the duration of the game?) to win win win?

are we afraid to win ?????? is there some impetus to keep our program down???? do we lose this game on purpose b/c we think that somehow it will encourage brandan wright to stay in school?....yeah right..........i think that the only reason that we are not celebrating UNC in the final four right now is because of bad coaching. bad coaching. bad coaching. play to win at all times, no matter the circumstance. we are winners, not tie-ers.

the correct play was drive to the hole. collect the foul. shoot two. and win. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels. go tarheels.

Face it boys...the Big East had the superior team in this game. Play it 100 times, we beat you 100 times. ACSeeyalater!

So if G-town and UNC played 100 times on a neutral floor, would G-town trail by double digits with just 6 to play each and every time or would G-town win by one hundred the other 99 times.

Good luck. It was a decent comeback but you guys have a long way to go.

The stronger team prevailed. Platoon basketball does not build the player stamina needed for tournament play. Our Achille's Heel.

Our top five players avgereged 30.2 mins playing time while Georgetown's top five averaged 36.4 minutes. And yet, Georgetown outscored us in the paint 56-32. So much for fresh legs. [In other Reg. Finals: FL's top 5 players averaged 34 mins; UCLA's top 5 averaged 32 mins; only OH State's top 5 average 30 mins]

Players with less stamina have problems closing the deal in tournament games. Liberal substituting also costs the Heels continuity in end-game situations.

Three Freshman, a sophomore, and sometimes a senior on the floor, otherwise, all freshmen and sophomores. The Heels hit every single free throw but could not buy a basket at the end. In terms of platooning, that is the only way to go with this much talent. Kentucky used a similar system under Pitino in the 1990's.

For all you so-called experts, what happened to Duke in 1999 or UNLV in 1991? It is one and you are out. It is idiocacy to make some of these comments.

While G'town was resting during regulation, Carolina had a 24 point advantage (29-5) at the charity stripe.

The stats tell the story. G'town has better players and played better off and def: 58% shooting to 35%; 26 assists to 15; 11 blocked shots to 4.

Refs: Georgetown fans point out that the Hoyas lost five of their last six games with Curtis Shaw working. He handled their loss to Villanova on 1-08-07 but none of their other games in 06-07. He called the technical on J. Thompson in this game.

the best thing about UNC this year has been there youth and talent, the worst thing about UNC this year was there youth and talent. Considering the fact that out of the 7 losses they had this year only one was clear blowout/loss everything else was close. Many times the young guys would get a lead and then not be agressive enough to close it out, or not be agressive to start and then step it up at the end only to lose by a few points. I think the best thing that could have happen for next years team is this years lost in the elite eight. The young talented team that runs 12 deep will be a monster next year.

I have to laugh everytime I hear Roy Williams say how boring it is to face teams that play great defense because they stop his teams from scoring in the 80-90 point ranges.

Roy Williams must learn there are no style points in the Final Four, yet the tenacious, suffocating defense Kansas played was anything but boring--it was spectacular.

Since coaches at other great college programs have long since caught on that great defense is the mandatory counterpart to great offense, don't look for the Tar Heels to be in the Championship Game anytime soon until Roy Williams stops his trash talk about good defensive teams and learns to coach great defense himself.
